Top Upperclassmen Performances of the Weekend: Guards

Basketball action was jumping on the 275 loop this weekend with summer shootout events taking place at Lakota West and Courts 4 Sports. So let’s talk about the top performers from the weekend with a look at the top upperclassmen guards. Carter Combs/G/Lakota West (’20) – We talked about the young bull Julian Mackey in our underclassmen edition of this article, now let’s talk about his back court mate in Combs. Saturday was another chance for Carter to show that he is more than a shooter and that is exactly what he did. He ran the lanes well transition as he was the finisher on numerous breaks while also showing some play-making abilities in half court sets as well. A competitor who plays hard on both ends, he also showed some athleticism getting up for what looked to be a clean block of Deer Park G Steve Gentry at the rim. Aaron Davis/PG/Woodward (’21) – Among the quickest guards in Southwest Ohio, Davis impressed on both ends Saturday in the Bulldogs contest against Mt. Healthy and Winton Woods. He was on his game defensively, getting his hands on balls in the passing lane while also taking the challenge of guarding the opposing teams best perimeter player. On the offensive end he was a terror in transition, living in the paint and pushing the pace, which is the Bulldog way. It was the continuation of what has been a very good summer for Aaron. Elijah Saxon/CG/Aiken (’21) – For some time Aiken has ran an offense that always worked best with three play making guards on the court. And with the graduation of D’Arris Dean, many wondered who would be the third guard for Coach Cass. Well, it looks Mr. Saxon is staking his claim to that spot and his performance against Walnut Hills Sunday helped his case. Elijah finished with 6 three-pointers made on the afternoon and you could see his confidence growing as the contest went on. A transfer from Hughes, look for Saxon to be an important part of the Falcons plans this upcoming season. Greg Stewart/G-W/Aiken (PHO #188, C/O ’21) – As he has been all summer, Greg was at his best in transition and off the dribble Sunday against Walnut Hills. Particularly in the 2nd half Stewart had success getting down-hill and finishing strong at the rim. He even provided the highlight of the weekend when he crashed the offensive boards for a strong two-handed put back over traffic.
