MN Top Dawgs 50, MN Comets Allen 47
The Top Dawgs boast deep athleticism and quickness which got the Comets in a small hole. The Brooklyn Center Centaur pair of 2023 wings in Quayavant Douglas and Jalyn Simmons were critical to that pressure. Simmons was active and slashing early to the rim for buckets. Then the Comets went 3-2 zone in half two and started to move the ball more efficiently, and by the end of the game it was tied up at 47. Queue up Q! Quayavant Douglas was instrumental using his already-proven varsity closing ability as an 8th-grader to use balance in taking the ball to the rim for scores, but with the final possession of the game he stepped into a contested triple and buried it for the win. Let’s credit Hopkins 2023 wing Jalen Cain for his defensive efforts and rebounding to be an impact player this game too.
Team 1 Tyus 58, Top Flight 47
The basketball IQ on both sides here was very apparent. Ball movement, cutting and disciplined defense made it a very pleasant contest. Team Tyus had the size advantage and held a double-digit lead most of the way thanks to a bevy of perimeter playmaking situations by Dylan Omweno (Apple Valley) and Matt Bluford (Maranatha). Lakeville North’s Jace Hernandez was as efficient as they come inside using his 6-3 frame to catch and score with ease in the paint. For Top Flight, Shakopee 6-1 guard Tyler Boegeman caught my eye with his fluidity off the bounce and springiness rebounding the ball. 5-6 Jordan guard Afton Koch was crafty as all heck handling the ball and distributing.
