33 varsity teams and one JV battled it out for 3 days. High level competition brought out the best in everyone. Teams learned a lot about themselves in some tough games and hopefully they can take it with them into next weeks live period.
Here were some of the rising senior standouts that I hadn’t talked about yet:
Osasere Ighodaro PF 6’9 185 Desert Vista
-I only saw him play once but he was about as impressive as he could be. He did all the little things well with rebounding, blocking shots, made the correct pass and got out in the break and dunked the ball elbows above the rim. He played well with off of newcomer 6’8 Solomon with a nice high low game. He makes the game look easy and is very patient.
Tay Boothman PG 6’0 160 Buckeye
-Boothman is healthy now. He barely played in the live period and seems a full-go now. (Had a separated shoulder so it literally hurt to shoot). He is quick with the ball in his hands and very calm. He is becoming a true PG by need but he will still pick his spots and score it any time he wants. He has deep range and a quick trigger. Once he turns the corner on his defender he can pull-up or get to the basket. He smartly uses the pick and roll to his advantage and consistently makes plays off of it.
Trent Hudgens PG 6’1 163 Moon Valley
-Hudgens is another talented scoring lead guard. He has unlimited range and will pull anytime. He makes others better and is super athletic on the break. He has a good burst to get into the lane and finishes with either hand. His best skill is definitely his on-ball defense. He uses his speed, lateral quickness and athleticism to disrupt opposing ball handlers.
James Burries SF 6’4 175 Moon Valley
-The Robin to Hudgens Batman will be Burries. He is very athletic and can shoot it from deep. He has great length to play the passing lanes and this duo may score over half of their teams total points. His shooting touch helps open up the court for the guards to get downhill. Look for Burries to breakout this year.
Jerry Iliya SF 6’5 190 Paradise Honors
-High motor athlete who defends. Big time transition player has great speed. He scores most of his points in the lane from drives, offensive rebounds and post ups. He can catch and shoot from the perimeter but is mostly a downhill player. His rebounding, blocking shots and defending in space are his best traits.
Xzavier Lino SF 6’5 178 Sunnyslope
-A true catch and shoot 3 and D type. He doesn’t put the ball on the floor much but has a super quick stroke with good size from the wing. He has great length and quickness to defend the wings. He can throw it down on the break and plays a conservative game. He will never take a bad shot and is a smart player.
