The prep school route isn’t for everyone, but Justin Cohen, a 6-foot-4 guard from Crisfield high school, should greatly benefit.
Cohen led his school to the 1A State Final came where they ultimately came up short. Since then, we’ve had the chance to get our eyes on Cohen in an AAU event where he displayed his impressive shooting ability from deep. At 6-foot-4 with a bruiser-type of build, you’d assume that Cohen is more of an undersized big. While he can absolutely battle down low on both ends, Cohen’s can catch fire from three and fill up the scoring column in a hurry. Cohen eclipsed 1800 points for his high school career this year as he felt his overall game come together as a senior.
“This season I was incorporated more as a point-forward type of player,” Cohen told Prep Hoops. “I was usually just a guy who was physical down low that could step outside and shoot, too, but I wanted to improve on all aspects of my game so I had the ball in my hands a lot more.”
Becoming a dependable ball-handler will be crucial for Cohen considering his height. He could get away with his physicality and size playing an undersized big at the Division II level, but adding the ability to make plays off the dribble will open his recruitment up significantly, especially as a Division I prospect.
“I want to keep tightening up my mechanics, especially my handles,” Cohen continued, “I’m a big believer in that no matter how good you are at something, you can always get better.”
UMES and Salisbury were recruiting Cohen aggressively considering he played his high school ball on the Eastern Shore, but Cohen is planning on going the prep route. Phelps School and Hargrave Military Academy were two that he included as schools he was considering.
What can a school expect to get with Cohen?
“I’m a team player. I just do whatever you need me to do on the court. Whether it’s shoot, play defense or whatever it is for us to get the win.”
