Although basketball isn’t his primary sport, you wouldn’t know it by watching Cedar Rapids Prairie guard Caden Stoffer on the hardwood.
Recently, Stoffer verbally committed to the University of Iowa baseball program. But he’s still planning to make his mark with the Hawks’ hoops program these next two seasons, and was impressive in Madison last weekend at The ROCK Spring Classic.
The 6’4 guard is big enough to see and shoot over defenders and with his handle continuing to improve, could be a very dangerous player next season at Prairie.
“I see myself as a shooting guard and my strength is being able to shoot over people if I need to get a shot off,” said Stoffer. “I’m working right now on my handle, so I can play more point guard spot. I want to improve my handle so I can be more of a guard that works the offense a little bit.”
Stoffer spent most of his time last season with the sophomore team, and shot the ball well. He sat with the varsity, too, and got a good look at the speed of the varsity game.
He’ll play a his spring and summer with the Iowa Mavericks’ top 16u squad, and was performing very well last weekend in Madison before going down with what he says is a likely ankle sprain. Stoffer should be back soon, though, and says his Mavs-Villagrana squad has a chance to be really good.
“I really like our team this summer, we have the potential to win a lot of games. I feel like if we play good defense and make our shots we have the potential to win a lot of games this summer,” said Stoffer.
As for recruitment, you can pretty much consider it closed. Although Stoffer loves hoops, it’s baseball that’s presented the opportunities.
“Right now, I’m committed to play basketball at the University of Iowa, so I’m focused on that,” said Stoffer. “I think I like basketball and baseball the same, it’s just I’ve gotten more opportunities for baseball.”
