While the basketball itself wouldn’t be described as ‘high quality’, there was certainly a lot of high quality talent filling up the courts.
Here are some forwards who stood out at the 17U level on Saturday
Jacob Jennison, MN Matrix
It’s hard not to notice Jennison on the floor. He’s 6-foot-11 but not the 6-foot-11 kid that is stumbling over his feet and too big for his body. He’s smooth, athletic and surprisingly sudden for such a tall kid. He doesn’t consistently play to his height, but when he does, he can dominate games on both ends of the floor.
Matt Banovetz, Comets DLR
Banovetz is one of the more skilled forwards in the 2020 class and he showed throughout Saturday that he’s capable of producing organically in the offense without demanding a lot of touches or disrupting flow. He runs the floor well and is usually in good position defensively.
Josh Rogers, Fury Kallman
Rogers struggled to shoot from deep in the game I watched but his activity level in the paint and around the rim was impressive. He was a rebounding machine for an undersized Fury team missing its big, big guys. He has the juice to play above the rim at 6-foot-4 and his quickness was a problem for opposing big men.
Ryan Thissen, Select Cave
Thissen is more of a perimeter guy but on Select Cave, he’s one of the taller players and checks opposing big guys more often. If big men guard him though, it’s a huge mismatch because he’s a terrific shooter and smart player when it comes to searching for his offense and playing within the flow of things.
Walker Johnson, Heat Presbitero
Johnson is an energetic and tough-minded interior guy who makes up for his lack of great height (6-foot-4/6-foot-5) with a hot motor. He’s strong as an interior defender and does a good job rebounding in and out of his area. Johnson runs the floor well and always makes himself available around the rim for drop offs and putbacks.
