Continue ReadingThe annual C103 All Star game took place last Friday with the top 2019 players from the Southern Hills Athletic Conference on display at West Union High School. So many players stepped up and showed off their skillsets, but a few went the extra mile. Unlike most All-Star games, defense was actually played on both sides as guys made plays on both ends of the floor. Below are my top performers from the night.
Gage Boone (2019) Eastern Brown
One of many top players on the Red Team Friday night, Boone impressed me with his ability to push the basketball in transition and get the offense started throughout the night. One of the fastest players on the floor, Boone created offense by getting in the paint consistently and even had a few nice finishes in traffic. I would go as far as say Boone was the top point guard prospect during the night.
CJ McCulley (2019) Fayetteville
McCulley was the tallest player present Friday night. Standing around 6’4, CJ is long and lengthy, using that size to be a disruptive presence on the perimeter. He showed an ability to score from all 3 levels which impressed me more than anything I saw from him during the night. Of all players that participated, I think CJ is the top collegiate prospect that played. If he could add some muscle, he could be a dangerous wing for a small JUCO program.
Ryan Rothwell (2019) West Union
The best ball handler during the night was not a point guard. Rothwell by far handled pressure better than anyone that played. His ability to break down defenders on the perimeter was impressive as well as his ability to create offensive opportunities by distributing the basketball to teammates. Ryan has a lot of drive and plays with tons of passion. This was on display in the Dragons postseason loss and again at the All Star game as he was diving after loose balls and hustling all over the floor.
Jacob Calvert (2019) Manchester
When it comes to a low post threat, Calvert played the role Friday night. A tough player with a high motor, Calvert had tremendous footwork and used his upper body well with his back to the basket in the paint. With the amount of guard and wing players on display, there were not a ton of moments for Calvert to show off his skills, but he took advantage of the few opportunities he had.
