Prospect Update: Chase Courbat (2021)
Big things could be coming for Cedar Falls big-man Chase Courbat.
Aside from being the top-ranked Class of 2021 prospect in our rankings, Courbat has perhaps been falling under the radar a bit up to this point of his career.
He’s been a reserve big-man on back-to-back Class 4A state title teams, and it seems the 6-foot-9 center won’t be a “secret” for much longer.
It’s his height, length and bounce that make him one of the more intriguing — maybe the most intriguing — sophomore prospect in the state.
“Since last summer, I’ve been working a lot on getting stronger and faster and becoming a better defender. Also working on being stronger with the ball, and just being more aggressive overall,” said Courbat.
“I’m going to be working on getting stronger and faster and then working on my shooting stroke and my ball-handling and then making sure I’m being aggressive at all times when I’m attacking the hoop.”
Courbat was often the first player off the bench for the state champ Tigers this season. He averaged 5.9 points on 66 percent shooting, 3.8 rebounds and 1.5 blocks per game.
“I just tried to do whatever the coaches needed me to do. If they told me to go rebound, that’s what I’d do that game, I’d just focus on trying to be the best rebounder I could be. If they needed me to protect the rim, that’s what I’d do that game,” that Courbat.
“I expect next year, that I’ll have to carry a lot more of the scoring load and just be more of a vocal leader on both sides of the ball.”
This spring, Courbat will play with an ultra-talented Martin Bros 16U squad. And hopes some of his college interest can materialize into coffers.
Courbat reports Wisconsin, Creighton, Iowa and Northern Iowa as schools he’s visited. He’s talked with Drake, and says Stanford has asked for his transcript and has talked to his high school coaches. Louisiana State has been asking about him as well.
“I’m hoping to just have a great summer and get a lot of colleges looking at me more. I already have a lot of interest, but I’d like to see if I can get a couple offers and to expand some of the interest,” Courbat said.
“Also, I just want to have fun with my team and try and win some of these tournaments.”
