Practice ran today from 8am this morning to about 12:30pm local time. Over 50 NBA scouts were in attendance alongside national media outlets in today’s practice and NBA guys got a sneak peak on some of the most talented prospects who they can see in the league in the next couple of years. Prospects from the West roster started things off at 8am this morning and ended about 10:30am local time. Prospects from the East roster followed right after.
There were a just a few standouts out of all 24 prospects in today’s practice. The McDonald’s All American practices are usually just a few drills and controlled scrimmages and guys are not going as hard. Well the 2019 class will be changing that rule as practice today was in a very high pace and guys went all at it. Which prospects stoodout the most you may ask? Kentucky commit SG Tyrese Maxey of South Garland (TX) probably caught most eye’s in today’s practice.
The 6-foot-2 two-guard’s shot mechanics showed greatly this morning. Maxey is an elite shot maker and has a pure stroke on his jumper. He brings the energy on the floor on both ends no matter what and was also able to show more than just be a knockdown shooter. Also headed to the SEC next season will be PG Tre Mann of Village Charter (FL), who has commited to Florida. Everyone knows Tre can shoot the lights out and is a pure scorer when he posses the ball. Besides his shooting skills, Tre put on display that he can be a playmaker and a more voacl facilitator.
The 6-foot-3 point guard was dropping dimes all morning during the drills and controlled scrimmages. Tre tells me that getting his teammates more involved is his main focus going into college next season and he will certainly add more depth to a Florida Gators squad who just came off a second round appearance in the NCAA tournament.
One prospect who is still on the board and stoodout was F Matthew Hurt of John Marshall (MN). Hurt’s top four schools include Kansas, North Carolina, Duke, and Kentucky and has announced he will make his decision on April 19th, the day before his birthday. At 6-foot-9, Matt showed scouts that he will definitely fit in today’s modern NBA game by hitting jumpshots from outside the paint and beyond the arc. His versatility was on full display and he will be able to guard every position on the floor on the defensive end.
Another uncommited prospect that popped eyebrows this morning was F Trendon Watford of Mountain Brook (AL). Watford has cut his list recently to Memphis, Alabama, LSU, and Indiana and should be making a decision soon. He is a 6-foot-9 small forward with an extremely great body frame and holds that score first mentality. Trendon has been considered one of the best scorers in his class and proved it in front the national media and NBA guys. He is a potential one-and-done whereever he decides to go to school and could be a potential lottery pick.
Villanova commit F Jeremiah Robinson-Earl could certainly be in that potential lottery pick for the 2020 NBA Draft as well. The 6-foot-9 forward stoodout this morning as well by just doing what he does best and that is almost everything. He is super mobile for a kid his size and holds high versatility. Robinson-Earl will fit Jay Wright’s Villanova style of play perfectly. Jeremiah can play inside or out and with his strong body, he is able to guard much bigger defenders down low. Another potential one-and-done that NBA scouts have loved over the last year or so.
