The sharp-shooting 6-foot-1, 175-pound guard is doing it all his senior season while helping his Union High School team to an undefeated record. College programs are clamoring for the services of the three-point marskman but first things first – the Titans are aiming for a long post-season run and Smith says it’s all because of the team concept.
“We play extremely well together – we have great team chemistry and all season we’ve battled together,” Smith said. “Everything we do is as a unit, as a team – that’s been the big thing. It’s been unbelievable – I couldn’t ask for a better senior season. 21-0 isn’t too bad; I couldn’t ask for anything better.”
Smith has done his share individually. Averaging almost 20 points a game, he’s been a knockdown shooter – he set the school record for threes made in a career – but also contributes by getting to the bucket and either scoring or hitting teammates for open shots. As Smith leads the Titans through the post-season – they opened up things with a big win over Sumner at home – a college decision looms. Schools such as Pacific Lutheran, George Fox, Pacific, Lewis & Clark, and Puget Sound are some of the ones he has mentioned in previous interviews.
“It’s been the same schools that have reached out to me as the beginning of the season,” Smith said. “It’s kind of slowed down as they have their seasons going on, but I think I’ll probably make a decision pretty soon after the season. I don’t want to wait too late. It’s still pretty broad and I’m keeping my options open.”
As noted, Union remains undefeated. What will it take for the Titans to not only reach state but perhaps win it all? “We just have to step it up into gear and keep on playing team basketball,” Smith said. “I just want to lead my team to the Tacoma Dome – that’s my number one thing right now.”
