Prospect Spotlight: Jamison Helmers (2020)
Much improvement was made by Okoboji guard Jamison Helmers from last season to this season.
The 5-foot-11 combo-guard plans to make more big strides this summer, and to be back better than ever for his senior season for the Pioneers.
Helmers has worked to develop as a pure scorer, and was able to get it done from beyond the arc and from getting to the rack this season.
“I feel like I’m decent at getting to the hole an I’m a lot better than last year, I really worked in the offseason at getting better at that,” he said. “I feel like my 3-point shooting and my pull-up game is a strength. I can run the point and create opportunities for other players.”
As a junior with Okoboji, Helmers was the team’s leading scorer, going for 16.9 points per game.
“I have great teammates who got me the ball a lot, and I had open 3s a lot of the time; percentage-wise, I was decent but not as good as I wanted. The season turned out really well for me, I thought,” said Helmers.
Now into his offseason, Helmers plans on playing 17U ball with a program this spring and summer. “I’m not really sure yet, I’m just kind of looking around still,” he said.
Whichever organization he lands with, it’ll be one where he can play plenty of hoops and develop into the best player possible ahead of his senior season.
“This summer, I’m really looking forward to playing with a team that likes to win. And I also want to get as much skill-development as I can in,” Helmers said. “I just want to play a lot of basketball.”
He’s also hoping to see some recruitment come his way. So far, a couple letters have come in, and he’s been to a couple prospect camps.
“I hope (recruitment) kind of picks up a little more from now on,” said Hemlers.
