Continue ReadingArea tournaments got underway at the beginning of last week. Games were happening all over the state on any given night. Thankfully, we were able to keep up with them for you and have put together a Class 6A Area 6-10 tournament recap, featuring every game and the top performers.
Area 6
Semifinal: Russell County vs. Benjamin Russell: 38-35
After both teams won at home during the regular season, this matchup was the true test for both of these teams. After a tight game, Russell County edged Benjamin Russell by 3 points and was able to move onto the Area 6 Championship game. Eric Lindsey led the way for the Warriors, with 20 points, including a 4-0 run in the final 30 seconds.
Finals: Opelika vs. Russell County: 63-56
Opelika topped Russell County twice in the regular season, and they were able to do it again to take home the Area 6 Championship. Despite a close game, Russell County couldn’t come out on top and fell 7 points shy. Jahwann Fields had a monster game for the Bulldogs, scoring 20 points and recording 17 rebounds. Jared Willis also had a nice game for Opelika, scoring 17 points.

-Opelika will play Calera in the Sub-Regional matchup on 2/12/19 at 7 pm at Opelika High School.
-Russell County will play Helena in the Sub-Regional matchup on 2/12/19 at 7 pm at Helena High School.
Area 7
Semifinal #1: Northridge vs. Hillcrest: 66-61
After 2 close games in the regular season, each team came into this matchup with one win. They battled through 4 quarters in a tight one, and Hillcrest came out on top by just 5 points to advance to the Area 7 Championship game. JaLon Johnson led the way for the Jaguars, with 26 points. Christian Jones also added 19 points and 4 rebounds. Sedrick Pettway had 19 points for Northridge and Jay Brantley added 17 points.
Semifinal #2: Paul W. Bryant vs. Brookwood: 65-30
After going winless in the area, Brookwood was looking for their first area win against Paul W. Bryant. Unfortunately for them, they did not get it and Paul W. Bryant routed them and advanced to the Area 7 Championship game.
Finals: Paul W. Bryant vs. Hillcrest: 51-43
After splitting their regular season matchups, Paul Bryant was able to steal the win in their third meeting of the season. Hillcrest found themselves down by 8 points at the final buzzer, and Paul Bryant walked away with the Area 7 Championship. Jamel King led the way for the Stampede with 29 points. JaLon Johnson was the top scorer for the Patriots with 22 points.

-Paul W. Bryant will play Stanhope Elmore in the Sub-Regional matchup on 2/12/19 at 7 pm at Paul W. Bryant High School.
-Hillcrest will play Selma in the Sub-Regional matchup on 2/12/19 at 7 pm at Selma High School.
Area 8
Semifinal #1: Calera vs. Chelsea: 42-32
Despite two losses to Chelsea in the regular season, Calera was able to avenge their losses in the area tournament. With a 10 point victory over Chelsea, Calera advanced to the Area 8 Championship game. CJ Smith put up 13 points for the Eagles and Cornelius Brown added 11 points to the team’s total.
Semifinal #2: Helena vs. Pelham: 40-37
Helena beat Calera twice in the regular season, and they barely edged them in the area tournament. After a close game, Helena walked away with a 3 point victory over Pelham, to advance to the Area 8 Championship game. Caden Pierce had 14 points for the Huskies and Davonte Cave had 9 points. For the Panthers, Blake Flyod put up 11 points and Chris Brown put up 10 points.
Finals: Helena vs. Calera: 62-61
After a close four quarters, Helena and Calera found themselves all tied up with 7 seconds left in the game. Helena had the ball, and Nate Andrews was fouled with .1 seconds left in the game. After missing his first free throw, it looked like it might be overtime. However, Andrews knocked down his second free throw, to give Helena the 1 point victory over Calera. Caden Pierce led the way for Helena with 20 points and Nate Andrews and Daunte Cave both added 13 points. Cornelius Brown was the top scorer for Calera, with 20 points, and Laparris Whatley added 11 points.
Area Champion: Helena

Area 9
Semifinal: Hueytown vs. Bessemer City: 77-61
Hueytown wasn’t able to overcome Bessemer City in the regular season, and they weren’t able to do it in their area matchup Tuesday night. Bessemer City walked away with a pretty big win over Hueytown and advanced to the Area 9 Championship game. Thaddeus Williams had a great game for the Tigers, with 19 points, 5 rebounds and 7 assists. Fernandus Brown also had an impressive performance, with 10 points and 13 rebounds. Kameron Harris also added 18 points to Bessemer City’s total. Quenton Bland led the way for Hueytown with 15 points and 3 rebounds. Caullin Bracy added 13 points and 3 assists for the Golden Gophers
Finals: McAdory vs. Bessemer City: 64-62
In their first matchup of the season, Bessemer City got a 1 point victory over McAdory. This time, they extended their winning margin to 2 points. In a close fought game, McAdory fell a couple of points shy and Bessemer City was able to take home the Area 9 Championship

-Bessemer City will play Carver (Birmingham) in the Sub-Regional matchup on 2/12/19 at 7 pm at Bessemer City High School.
-McAdory will play Gardendale in the Sub-Regional matchup on 2/12/19 at 7 pm at Gardendale High School.
Area 10
Semifinal #1: Shades Valley vs. Homewood: 38-34
Shades Valley lost twice to Homewood in the regular season, and despite a close game, Homewood came out victorious in this one. Homewood found themselves down 29-20 at the end of the fourth. However, thanks to an impressive performance by Bo Barker, who had all 11 of his points in the fourth, Homewood ended up winning by 4 points and advanced to the Area 10 Championship game. Logan Padgett led the way for the Patriots, with 16 points, followed by Bo Barber who had 11 points.
Finals: Huffman vs. Homewood: 63-44
Despite only losing by 1 point last time the two teams met, Huffman took care of business at home against Homewood. Huffman defeated Homewood by 19 points and took home the Area 10 Championship. Eddie Smith lead the way for Huffman with 19 points, 6 assists, and 4 steals. Mike Lockhart also added 8 points and had 12 rebounds for the Vikings.
