So let’s take a look at some of the stories that have been pleasantly surprising for us so far this year.
.) Greenfield Knights are 27-4: With the graduation of current UNC and Future NBA Player Coby White, there was plenty of question about what would happen this season. Well the Knights have been outstanding and have played their way into being in the debate as a top private school team in the state without a doubt. The way the Knights have got it done is by committee, and the scary part is they only graduate one player from their roster this season.
.) Fayetteville Academy is the Best Team in Fayetteville and will be a dangerous State Tourney team: The Eagles have been a team that has been solid over the years, but this season they seem to have reached a different level. With Senior Guard John Michael Wright leading the way they put together a record of 22-2 on the year with the 2 losses coming to Village Christian and Farmville Central.
.) East Carteret 2021 Guard Bennie Brooks is the real deal! East Carteret has a nice tradition when it comes to basketball, we have seen their school produce quite a few college prospects as well as taking home a state championship. Brooks is the next in line and its showing with how well he’s playing and the numbers he’s putting up on a game by game basis. He’s put together quite a few 20 and 10 point games and even some 30/40+ point performances which is extremely impressive for a sophomore.
.) The FCS Warriors have put everyone in the area on notice that they are forreal! They put together a 14-13 record this season after finishing 6-19 last year, pulling of some impressive victories. The team has multiple players that can play on the next level but the player that has really shown out is Junior Wing Jaden Scriven. Scriven has put up some monster scoring and rebounding numbers in his first season at FCS, he can play inside the paint when needed but also has a skillset to play on the wing.
.) Durham Academy has a 25-3 record and should make a deep state run! The Cavs feature top 2022 prospect MJ Rice but don’t let that fool you into thinking they are a one man team. Rice went down with an injury in December and the team showed their depth and ability to still get the job done. The squad features Senior Bryant Randleman who is averaging just under 15 PPG as well as PG Michael Savarino who is also a player who has put up solid performances throughout the year.
