Continue ReadingPark Center junior wing Detavius Frierson has surely been one of the biggest stock raisers of the 18-19 high school season. Frierson is the third leading scorer for the undefeated and number one ranked Pirates.
The explosive, athletic, hard working wing with hair flying is always around the basketball for the Pirates making plays with a dozen points and 7-8 boards a contest. Pirates Coach James Ware loves having Frierson on the floor nearly all game. And Frierson has earned it.
“First, I Detavius Frierson, we call him “DT”, I think he is one of Minnesota’s best kept secrets,” Ware said. “He came back to Minnesota his sophomore year after going to Illinois. He had a knee injury and is now back healthy. Was able to get healthy at the end of last season.
“In terms of around Brooklyn Park, DT is feared by all because he is a freak athlete and a ferocious competitor. So really it’s only a matter of time before every body recognizes what kind of special player he is.”
DT FriersonFrierson described the work he has put in to his game after a 30 point win over Cooper last week.
“I have been waking up at 6am pretty much every day getting up 500 shots before school,” Frierson explained. “School starts early at 7 so I am constantly there early every day with Dain Dainja. My motivation kind comes from me not being the most looked at player, a lot of people really don’t know me.”
Not only is DT working to help his Park Center team play for the state tournament, but he’s also going to be a member of the Howard Pulley Panther EYBL 17u team so Frierson is extra motivated.
“I’m not on anybody’s radar right now, but with this upcoming season with the team I’m playing for, this is likely going to be my break out year. I’ve just been putting in hard work because I know this season and then this EYBL season is going to be tough. Playing in the EYBL I’ve been preparing all day and every day because that circuit is going to be tough.”
Right now the Park Center Pirates enter the night at 8-0 with a game against Centennial at 7pm. Park Center is the one team that has been able to fight through their rough schedule undefeated so far giving them the top spot in the state.
“Honestly what makes us different is our work ethic, the time we put in every day,” Frierson explained. “There is maybe one or two guys on most teams that get up and put in early work but with us, we are a whole team. We come as a pack. The summer open gyms, everybody showed up. We went at each other, beat each other, and made each other better.
“We also wake up as a team at 6am and get up shots. Nobody backs out, nobody has excuses, we are really smart, hard working players. And we can play any style of basketball.”
Frierson is still jumping on the radar of schools but some have learned the name and are starting to follow the game.
“Some teams that have contacted or have seen me play are Northern Iowa, the Gophers, Utah State, Baylor has been looking at me, Florida, Illinois, just those schools,” DT said.
“They are just contacting me, seeing what I have for talent, seeing what I bring to the table every night as a defender and as a player. I text a lot of those coaches and often times it’s not always about basketball. It’s been cool because I have to build relationships with coaches as I decide what I want to do in the future.”
Frierson will never rest. He’s always focused on what he has to do to get even better.
“I’m already athletic and I can defend, I would say that I need to get better as a shooter. Getting in the habit of being confident. This year I am really confident in my shot because I work on it every day. I want to get to more one dribble pull-ups and coming off ball screens. I work on shooting every day, my driving lanes are already there. But the thing that I want to improve this most this year is my shooting.”
