After being used a role player the past two seasons at Sioux City West, senior Micah McWell has seen his role expand greatly this season.
The 5-foot-11 guard has been an efficient sharpshooting second option for the 11-4 Wolverines this season. And says the toughness he brings to the team is a his most unique trait.
“I think coming straight from football, I have the physical mentality and I like to be athletic. So I think just running up and down the floor and hustling more than other people is what I really like to do, honestly,” said McWell.
As stats go, it’s his shooting prowess that has been most impressive. McWell is shooting 51 percent from the floor, and 45 percent from deep this season.
“When it comes to game-time, my high shooting percentage is all about taking high-percentage shots. We do a good job of moving the ball around and my shots are not ill-advised, there’s usually nobody really around; so that helps a lot.”
Through 15 games this season, McWell is not only shooting the ball with great precision, but he’s averaging 12.7 points and 4.4 rebounds this season.
“My first couple years, I was used a spot-up and shoot guy, and used as a role player. Now that I’m a senior, I need to help out Cliff (McCray) more and be that supporting guy that he needs, so we can have that one-two punch.”
McWell added: “Our goals are to win the conference, and even if that doesn’t happen, we’re looking to go to state. We want to get down there and compete.”
With his high school career coming to an end, McWell hopes to compete athletically at the collegiate level; whether that’s in football or basketball is to be determined.
The defensive back has been in contact with Morningside, Truman State, Drake and a “couple more local schools” for football. But he’s still open to considering basketball in college.
“I’m still open for basketball, I just haven’t had a lot of coaches talk to me about it,” he said.
