15) Dutchtown (15-5)
You might be wondering why Dutchtown is currently the 3rd ranked team in 5A according to LHSAA’s power rating, but they are the 6th ranked team out of 5A on our Top 25 rankings. The answer is their schedule. They are 1-3 this season against teams in our Top 25, which makes them the highest ranked team to only have one win against members of this ranking. Now their record is impressive, nonetheless, and it isn’t like they are beating up on 1A and 2A schools. They have been playing solid 4A and 5A teams. Just not many of the powerhouses that the state has to offer.
16) Catholic BR (18-5)
I will give Catholic High their credit, they beat the teams that they are supposed to beat. They have won every game against a team that is ranked behind them in this ranking, with the exception of a loss to #22 Pontchatoula . What that means is that all of their losses have come against teams in the top 25. However, before this week, they didn’t have any wins against other top 25 teams. They fixed that this week, when they were able to take down #25 Live Oak. The Bears have the talent to compete with anyone in the state, but they just haven’t quite gotten over the hump when it comes to beating the best of the best.
17) Breaux Bridge (22-3)
I will be honest, the Tigers being this high definitely took me by surprise. But all credit to Breaux Bridge, and Coach Chad Pourciau, as he is definitely maxing out the talent that he has. They haven’t played the toughest schedule in the world, but they have definitely beaten some really solid 4A and 5A schools. I am a big fan of 2019 PG Seth Alexander’s shooting ability, and when he is on, he is really on.
18) Woodlawn-Shreve (20-5)
I think I am getting to the point in the season where I might have seen Woodlawn-Shreve a little too much. I know that might sound like an oxymoron, but I will explain. I have seen them enough times to know what not only what their biggest strengths are, but also their biggest weaknesses. Their strengths are clear, and they are clearly one of the most talented teams that the boot has to offer. I just worry about their weaknesses being exploited once playoff time comes around. However, their talent is more than capable of getting them to a state championship game, just as they were able to do a season ago.
19) Jehovah Jireh (26-4)
Not enough credit can be given to the program that Coach Dirk Ricks has built at Jehovah Jireh. He has turned a small class C sized school into a team that is not only a small school powerhouse, but a school that is capable of competing with the best schools that Louisiana has to offer. Senior PG Jaron Davis is exactly what I look for when it comes to a point guard, and definitely has an old school approach to the position. He is a lockdown defender, and is trying to consistently set up his teammates in positions to succeed on the court.
20) Dunham (20-4)
Of the 4 losses that Dunham has on their resume, they have only come from a total of 2 in state schools. They have lost twice to Scotlandville, the top team in the state in what was a competitive game each time, and to Jehovah-Jireh once. They also lost to Bishop Loughlin, a school out of New York, in the championship game of the Allstate Sugar Bowl Classic National Prep Classic, which is in my opinion the best tournament that Louisiana has to offer. Dunham is right on pace to repeat as state champions this season, unless the next team has anything to say about it.
21) Country Day (15-7)
There is little doubt in my mind that Country Day is just as talented as any team that Louisiana has to offer. They have multiple potential D1 prospects on their team, and Coach Mike McGuire is as experienced and talented a coach as the Boot has. However, I’m not sure that Country Day has reached their full potential yet this season. They had a stretch to end December where it looked like they were starting to turn the corner, but then had a stretch to start January where they lost 3 of 4, during an admittedly tough string of games. They now have a challenging, but not impossible stretch of games to end the season, and if they can go on a nice winning streak to end the season, they will be right where they want to be, contending for a state title with Dunham.
