1) Scotlandville (25-1)
Well, if you read the Div. I Class rankings article earlier this week, then you shouldn’t be too surprised with who is sitting atop the first power rankings of the year. The Hornets have played one of the toughest schedules in the state, if not the toughest, and they have come out largely unscathed (more on that in a minute). What’s all the more impressive? The top team in the state, regardless of class doesn’t have a single senior on the team. That’s right, they are bringing this entire squad back next season, barring any unforeseen transfers.
2) Sophie B. Wright (24-3)
Remember a minute ago when I talked about Scotlandville being largely unscathed so far this season? Well meet the team that did the scathing. Sophie B. Wright is the only team in the state capable of boasting that they have beaten Scotlandville. However, despite being arguably a top 2 team in the state, and inarguably being a top 5 team in the state, the LHSAA power rankings somehow have them as the 4th seed in 3A. Now there is plenty of time before the playoffs start for the kinks to work themselves out, but if things continue like they have so far this season, anything less than the top seed is simply a travesty.
3) Rayville (23-5)
I will be honest, if you would have asked me who was the best team in the state heading into the season, my resounding answer would have been Rayville. They return 4 starters from last season’s undefeated season, including the top player in the state for 2019, in Mylik Wilson. However, this season hasn’t been the same easy jog to a state title that last season was. Now, admittedly, Rayville has played a much tougher schedule than they had a season ago, and every team that they have lost to appears on this ranking. So despite dropping a few, they are still the favorites for the 2A state title. There just won’t be a 0 in the loss column at the end of this year.
4) Bossier (21-3)
5) Peabody (19-3)
Here is a pretty impressive fact that can be said both about Peabody and about Bossier this season. Not only have their only losses come against teams that are ranked in the Prep Hoops Power Rankings Top 25, their only losses have come against teams that are included in this article. That’s right, of their six combined losses, all of them have come from one of the top 7 teams in the state this season. And that also includes the loss that each has against the other, as they are both 1-1 against each other this season.
6) St. Augustine (23-3)
Well I guess it always had to come to an end, and I admit I do feel some responsibility in jinxing the Purple Knights. After I spent half of my analysis for St. Aug talking about their long winning streak in an article earlier this week, they lost a tough one in district to Rummel. The bad news is that their 16 game winning streak is no longer. The good news is that if St. Augustine gets on another long winning streak and doesn’t lose another game this season, then no one will ever talk about this week’s loss again.
7) Madison Prep (18-7)
I will give coach Jeff Jones a lot of credit; he isn’t afraid of playing anyone. For my money, Madison Prep has played as tough a schedule as you are going to find. They have had matchups against an astounding 11 teams in this Top 25 rankings. That also doesn’t include the three games against out of state opponents. Most coaches would be afraid of this level of competition for a team that lost 3 Division 1 players from the team a season ago. But not Coach Jones, and it has worked out well for them so far.
