There have also been some impact, individual performances by several players. Day 2 did not stray away from this theme. Right here on Prep Hoops Louisiana, we will review some of last night’s performances.
Charlie Russell / 6’7″ / 2019 / Sophie B. Wright
Sophie B. had a dominate performance for the majority of Friday’s game with defending 5A champion Walker and Charlie Russell was the primary catalyst. Russell ended up with a team high of 30 and they needed everyone of those points. In the first three quarters, it appeared as if he could not miss. Russell bombed from deep behind the high school line. Then he overpowered Walker forwards to finish in the paint. When Wright got the rebound and pushed the ball, there was no one better running the wing. Russell showed that he can be a dominate offensive player. His versatility has the makings of a top level D1 player. Games like that may continue to come as on Wright moves further along into the season.
Jalen Cook / 6’0″ / 2020 / Walker High School – Player of the Night
The first player mentioned would have been the player of the night if it were not for this gentleman. Even in a loss, Jalen Cook demonstrated why he is one of the top guards in this state. Cook’s team was down nineteen points after three; however, his will to win and competitiveness kicked in. What happened next was a 17 point 4th quarter than was impressive to say the least. Cook carved up the defense as a one man fast break finishing at the rim. Then he dropped a couple of three pointers. During several possessions he found teammates like Brian Thomas (6’4″, 2021) for layups or three pointers. Jalen drew much attention and for good reason. He was practically unstoppable. While they did not prevail, his fourth quarter (along with his game high 34), was star of the night worthy.
Tramichael “T-Mike” Moton / 6’1″ / 2020 / Woodlawn (Shreveport) High School
Woodlawn (Shreveport) played Westgate in the final night’s consolation bracket game. The Knights easily dispatched Westgate by 28 scoring 74 points. Moton was responsible for one-third of them. His game high 29 came by his assortment of moves and shots. Tramichael would hit a three on one possession and drive to the cup and get fouled on the next possession. On the fast break he executed a spin move layup leaving the defender helpless. Then, to close the games end, he scored on layups from the Knights motion offense. Again, the variety of his game is truly special. With his work on last night, he has led his team to the consolation semis. That performance was also star of the night material.
Cameron Steward / 6’4″ / 2020 / Southwood High School
Our final star of the night did not put up gaudy numbers in the high twenties or thirties. Steward only scored 10 points during the Cowboys game against Carencro. In this ten point performance, Steward displayed the versatility to his game. Steward is a wing who helps the Cowboys with his shooting ability. He can turn and face on wings/forwards who guard him. His touch is deadly within 16 feet. He can rebound well for his slight frame. When he gets fouled, he can bury free throws with regularity. Steward can also switch and guard bigs or small guards with his length. With his ability to do multiple things on the floor, his ten points were worth more due to the threat he creates. Plus, he was the first Cowboy forward to score in double digits this season. That was a much needed feat going forward.
All of these players were stars of the night because of their performances. They are also players who are still being actively recruited by schools big and small. All of them will be apart of day three at Madison Prep’s Rumble on the River. Game play begins at 2 pm with the semifinals of both brackets.
