Iowa’s Player of the Week (2)
Nick Reid (Central City)
An unbelievable 57 point performance against Midland, Wyoming was the crown jewel of Reid’s week. He made 22 of 25 free-throws in that game, and pulled down 10 rebounds for good measure. He also had a 34 point performance earlier in the week in a win over Central Elkader. In three games last week, the 6-foot-5 wing averaged 37.3 points, 12.7 rebounds and 3 steals.
Parker Rochford (Edgewood-Colesburg)
Before Nick Reid joined the season’s 50-point club, Rochford was the first to score 50 last Monday. He did so in a four overtime win over MFL-Mar-Mac, then stayed hot throughout the week, scoring 20 and 19 in a second and third game. The Vikings went 2-1 last week, Rochford, a 5-foot-10 sophomore, averaged 30 points, 5.7 rebounds and 4 steals per game.
Braden Gibbons (Madrid)
This has been a wildly successful season so far for Gibbons and the Tigers. And their 5-0 start has a lot to do with the fact that Gibbons is averaging 22.6 points and 10.6 assists per game. Last week, the Tigers went 3-0 with wins over Woodward Academy, Baxter and Panorama, Gibbons was his sensational self in all three, going for 21 points, 10.7 assists and 6 rebounds per game.
Ryan Schmitt (Van Meter)
In a win over Woodward Academy on Friday, Schmitt, a 6-foot-10 senior post, pulled down 24 rebounds, that’s a season high so far in the state, and a big reason why he’s among Iowa’s early-season rebounding leaders. Schmitt’s Bulldogs won twice last week, he was dominant while averaging 17 points on 56 percent shooting, 17 rebounds and 6 blocks per game.
Tyreke Locure (Des Moines North)
Here’s a guy that could be put in the Player of the Week poll every single week. In two Polar Bears wins last week, he was his usual dynamic self, going for 33 points, 9 rebounds, 5 assists and 8 steals in a won over Des Moines Roosevelt, then 37 points, 9 rebounds, 6 assists and 6 steals in a win over Norwalk, yeesh.
