Continue ReadingBreck and David Roddy ended up being too much for the standout Lake City junior combo of Nate Heise and Reid Gastner in the Breakdown Tip-Off Classic, with Roddy bullying his way into a double-double to make the difference in the 57-52 Mustangs victory. Despite hot shooting form Lake City role players, Breck pushed the lead into double-digits just early enough to hold on by five.
Matchup nightmare. 6-foot-5 David Roddy just has too much of an advantage offensively to be challenged especially at the AA level. It’s effectively over when he utilizes the aggressiveness he did in the second half—he was 10-12 at the free throw line for the game and that gave him 22 total points. His attacks late in the second half proved to be a huge difference maker that gave Breck the cushion they needed.
Gastner goes! Reid Gastner is known for his grit and toughness and discipline in the paint but we saw some awesome perimeter game from him today. Reid knocked down five treys and scored 19 to lead Lake City and he also put up as valiant a fight as any guarding David Roddy.
Ball security. I really liked what I saw from Jaren Morton at the Breck point guard spot last year. He’s still only a sophomore and his vision and handle are improved. Being trusted with the ball is a big deal when you have a safety net in Roddy, but Morton gets his share and does what’s necessary on the playmaking end. Made a lot of good basketball plays on both ends.
Potential is visible. Nate Heise is a really good basketball player and though he’s had some injury and consistency roadblocks in recent years, at the AA level he’s as good a guard as any and can go off at any moment. He scored 12 today but with his length and range from downtown he makes a heck of a MIAC prospect or maybe even better. I get excited watching him because I never know what’s coming.
Lake City help. Jake and Justin Wohlers were instrumental in the small comeback for Lake City down the stretch, combining for six three-pointers. The two wings will be huge assets as most of the attention is drawn to Heise and Gastner; don’t be surprised if you see some small explosions from these two down the road.
