Prospect Spotlight: Carson Peterson (2019)
A two-sport standout from Salem Hills, Carson Peterson will not only shine on the hardwood this season, but on the track, too.
The 6-foot point guard will see his role increase dramatically this winter for the Skyhawks basketball team. He’ll be showcasing some high-level speed and a penchant for the pushing tempo.
“My athleticism is definitely my biggest strength. I play super fast and I like to push the ball and play in transition,” said Peterson. “I push the floor really well and attack the hoop, and I always like to get my teammates open.”
Although he did not play grassroots ball, he’s a serious track-runner and has spent the summer training for both track and basketball.
“Over the summer I’ve been training by myself as well as with my teammates,” said Peterson. “So I’ve been going to shoot for a few hours a day, then I go and lift and then train at the track every day.”
Salem Hills’ hoops team, which won state last season, will rely on the speedy point guard heavily this season. He came off the bench and played 5-12 minutes per game last winter as a junior.
“Last season, I came in and was usually the guy that would guard the other team’s best player, I usually came in for defensive purposes,” he said. “This year, I’m going to have to contribute as one of the bigger scorers and probably the biggest leader on the team.”
Recruitment-wise, he’s seeing more come in for track than for hoops. He’s been talking with BYU, Louisville and all the Ivy League schools for track.
“Basketball would be fun (in college), but I’m getting a lot more interest in track. I’ve been talking to big schools,” said Peterson. “I’ve only gotten small offers, but there’s a lot of bigger schools waiting for my senior season to see how well I do.”
