The 17U Top 20 (July Update II)
A week before our final are inked, we’re back with the detailed report of top 20 17U teams.
Events in Grand Rapids, Louisville, and Columbus provided both clarity and confusion in some ways. Apex and All Ohio Red left the weekend with first place trophies. Others trended in the opposite direction. Meanwhile, C2K has brushed some dirt off their shoulder from the late-spring and is turning in a super impressive July. Regardless of how their UA Finals goes, they’re a top two team undoubtedly.
Also, roster changes — and even one completely new team — have mixed up the scene in July. Considering the fluidity of some rosters, recent performance is now becoming a big factor for The Committee (it’s just me), although spring performance is still relevant.
# | 17U Team | Notes | Previous |
---|---|---|---|
1 | All Ohio Red | Red went 6-0 to win the Nike Summer Championship without dispute. They won each game by at least 16 points. | 1 |
2 | C2K Elite | C2K is making a real push for the no. 1 spot in July with a Live Period record of 8-3. They made it to the semifinals at Brawl for the Ball and racked up wins against other super pool teams like Indy Heat Red, 1 Nation, and Michigan Playmakers. | 4 |
3 | Nova (James) | Nova also played in a super pool at Brawl for the Ball. They finished 2-3 and were eliminated in the quarterfinals. Wins against Green Wood Elite and Grand Rapids Storm. | 3 |
4 | TNBA Flash | A week after dominating the Chicago Summer Slam, TNBA Flash takes a step back by going 3-2 in the Nike Summer Championship. They competed in the second bracket on Sunday and lost in the finals. | 2 |
5 | Darius Miller Elite | D Miller Elite was 3-3 in Louisville. But if you go a little deeper, they competed in a super pool, two of their losses were against AOT (no. 11 team in the country), and they were the tournament's runner-up. Overall, actually a very nice weekend. | 5 |
6 | All Ohio Gold | Columbus didn't treat them as well as Louisville's Ballin Under 1 Roof. But, a 2-2 Nike Summer Championship record isn't enough to move them off the no. 6 spot. | 6 |
7 | Northwest Ohio Basketball Club | NW Ohio beat teams like M2K Elite and Grand Rapids Storm at Brawl for the Ball. Overall 6-2 weekend record and the second bracket's runner-up. They'd be higher is AO Gold didn't beat them by 18 last weekend in Louisville. | 10 |
8 | Nova (Russell) | In Louisville, this Nova group was 4-2 and lost in the second bracket championship to Mid Ohio Pumas. They'll need to post a nice record at the Louisville JamFest to remain in the top eight. | 7 |
9 | Apex | Apex had their best weekend of the year by going 6-0 at the All In HoopFest and winning a top bracket. | 13 |
10 | Mid Ohio Pumas | The Pumas ended their grassroots season with a statement victory over Nova (Russell) in a second bracket championship. Ended the season with a winning percentage of 64 percent. | 12 |
11 | Dayton Metro | Dayton Metro moved up five spots (there's an argument they should be even higher) after one heck of a weekend in Grand Rapids. They posted a record of 7-1, won the second bracket, and had wins against NW Ohio and Playground Elite. Only loss was against Indy Heat EYBL. With Bash Wieland now on the team, a similar performance in Fort Wayne will propel them into the top ten easily. | 16 |
12 | All Ohio Black | All Ohio Black had a very respectable 3-1 weekend at the Nike Summer Championship. They moved down three spots simply because Apex, Pumas, and Dayton Metro were spectacular. | 9 |
13 | Ohio Basketball Club | OBC went 1-3 in adidas' West Coast event but still had a nice win over Team Carroll Premiere. | 8 |
14 | TNBA Ohio | Overall winning percentage of 62.5 percent after a 4-1 weekend at the Nike Summer Championship. | 14 |
15 | Ohio Reign | Reign had another really strong weekend to keep their momentum going. They were 3-1 in Grand Rapids with their loss coming by one point against Green Wood Elite. | 15 |
16 | Miller Factory | Miller Factory was 3-1 in the Nike Summer Championship and had a signature win over TNBA Flash during pool play. | 17 |
17 | Ohio Hoopsters - Nakasian | This Hoopsters group was 2-2 at the All In HoopFest and was eliminated in the first round of the second bracket. | 11 |
18 | Shining Star - Price | For the second weekend in a row, Shining Star posted a 3-1 record. They've played in Indianapolis and Louisville during the Live Period. | 18 |
19 | Nova (Rodgers) | They rebounded from a shaky weekend in Indy in a major way. In Columbus, this team went 5-1, beat All Ohio Black, and lost by just one point in the semis of the top bracket. | NR |
20 | TNBA East Black | TNBA East Black has an overall winning percentage of 75 percent and went 4-1 in Columbus. | NR |
