Live Period Breakout Candidates (Part I)
As the weather in Iowa reaches a boil in July, so does offseason recruitment. Three straight live period weekends occur during the latter half of the month, and that means college coaches will be ubiquitous. Below, we’ll take a look at eight guys who we feel are may be in line for some scholarship offers by month’s end.
Jake Hilmer, 5’10 PG (Barnstormers Gold 17U)
He comes into the July live periods with a slew of Division II offers, including Pittsburg State, Truman State, Upper Iowa, Wayne State and Southwest Minnesota State. His main knock is his size, but the the skill-set and intangibles are high-level. It will be interesting to see if low-major D1s get involved.
Tamin Lipsey, 6′ G (All Iowa Attack 16U)
The Ames freshman-to-be picked up an offer from Iowa State in June, that was big time. Now, he’s almost certainly got the attention of other high-major D1 programs. Will they pull the trigger this summer too?
Kris Murray, 6’6 SG (Barnstormers Silver 17U)
With the right size and ability from deep, Murray is a guy that has been recruited by plenty of programs, but nobody has pulled the trigger quite yet. With a big July, he could be a guy who sees offers start to roll in.
Evan Gauger, 6’2 G (All Iowa Attack 17U)
Queens University in Charlotte has offered the skilled and athletic combo guard, and he’s been busy making himself seen this spring and summer on the camp circuit. If Gauger plays the way we’ve seen him play the last few months, he could be in store for a big July.
Japannah Kellogg, 6’6 SF (D1 Minnesota 17U)
Division I schools have been showing plenty of interest for a while now, but no offers have come in just yet. Could they be waiting to get one more evaluation of the big, lengthy and versatile forward?
Lino Malual, 6’2 G (Beyond Ball 17U)
Malual is one of the most athletic guys in Iowa, and when he leaps, he floats. But he pairs that lift with some skill, and is more than capable of canning 3-balls with regularity. D1 and D2 programs should continue to take notice this summer.
Hosea Treadwell, 6’2 G (Kingdom Hoops-Mosley 17U)
He had a big spring, and projects to have a big summer, too. Treadwell has been the heart and soul of one of the state’s best AAU teams, and if Kingdom Hoops-Mosley can advance deep in their July tourneys, then we like Treadwell’s chances of picking up some serious interest/offers.
Zach Martinek, 6’4 G (Iowa Prep 17U)
Martinek is a guy that not only possesses tons of size, but he’s got a multitude of skills. He can handle it, shoot it, rebound it and defend. If D2s aren’t involved by summer’s end, we’d be surprised. D3s and NAIAs should be all over this kid right now.
