Michael Schaefer of St. Cloud Cathedral got an absolutely monumental push from his community last week when he racked up more than 7,000 votes for Northstar Weekly Honors — easily the most of any nominee all year.
His huge contributions scoring and rebounding in a 2-0 week for SCC earned him a nomination. He (6-6) and Mitch Plombon (6-7 Winona State commit) provide a huge size edge in class AA.
“We definitely have a size advantage,” Michael said. “As opponents continue to double and triple team me, I have been able to get a lot of easy assists. Chemistry is still something that is continuing to improve on our team.”
Schaefer and Cathedral have felt the sting of two very close and recent losses to Melrose and Annandale.
“So far we have won the games we are suppose to win, but we have fallen short against better teams like Caledonia, Melrose, and Annandale,” he said. “In order to win big games, our team needs to play together and share the ball. If players accept their roles, find the open man, and not force bad shots, I’m confident we can compete anybody in the state… time will tell.”
Michael went on to name Annandale, Melrose, Albany, and Eden Valley-Watkins as the toughest opponents in SCC’s section.
