West Geauga’s Josh Irwin (2021): another diaper dandy for Northeast Ohio and other Friday notes
There are some outstanding freshman in the Cleveland area and none is having a better statistical year I would venture to say than West Geauga’s Josh Irwin. The 6’5” forward is averaging a double and recently put up a 24 point, 20 rebound six assist stat line in a Wolverine win over Orange high school.
He’s shooting 54 percent from the field and an impressive 89 percent from the free throw line and can also shoot it from deep as he’s had multiple games with multiple 3’s.
According to his coach Jeff Javorek the freshman displays an acutely high basketball IQ on the floor and does some sublime things that can’t be taught like grabbing a rebound and unleashing a one-hand full-court outlet pass.
“His court vision, it’s amazing,” said Javorek who also raved about Irwin’s efficiency on the court. “He’s a stud.”
Irwin first gained notice last spring when he played at a showcase against some of the area’s top players and Garfield Heights and held his own, said Javorek.
Bowling Green has shown an early interest and Michigan also recently inquired about Irwin, according to Javorek.
Lakewood looking impressive
No team looked better in the summer league at The Word Church than Lakewood and the Rangers have continued that momentum.
They currently are amongst the league leaders in the Southwestern Conference at (10-2 overall, 9-1 SWC), just a game behind Olmsted Falls (9-0 SWC and 12-1 overall), and their size will make them a very tough matchup come tournament
The Salas brothers, Jacob and Tommy, lead the way.
The 6’9” Jacob Salas (2018) and his 6’7” brother Tommy Salas (2019) combined for 41 points and in recent win.
Solon continues to impress
The Solon Comets are off to an undefeated start but they should get a tough challenge tonight on the road when they take on Elyria (7-7). They are currently ranked No. 2 in the state in Division I Associated Press Poll.
The Comets (12-0) are led by their outstanding senior guard Sincere Carry (2018). He’s considered one of the premier playmakers in the area and has scored 222 points in 12 games. Carry has battled leg injuries after being one of the most highly-touted players in the class when it first entered high school. He’s committed to West Liberty University. The Comets are slightly undersized, but push the pace and have to be one of the area’s highest-scoring teams.
Trent Williams (2019) and Michael Bekelja (2019) can both drop 20 at any time and Bekelja has early committed to Fairmont University.
