Five observations from St. V’s lopsided win over Youngstown Ursuline attended by LeBron James
Five observations from St. Vincent-St. Mary’s 84-33 win over vs. Youngstown Ursuline in which The King returned to the crib to take in the contest.
1 — St. Vincent-St. Mary junior big man Lunden McDay has steadily improved over the course of the season. The long, lean 6-2 tweener had another active night in the Irish 84-33 win over Youngstown Ursuline on Jan. 19 scoring a game-high 12 points and collecting five rebounds, all on the offensive end. On the season he’s averaging 12. 5 points per game and is shooting an impressive 61 percent from the field.
“He’s doing well. He’s stepped up scoring the ball more. Over the last five games, he’s averaging about 18 a game. He’s really doing well,” said St. V coach Dru Joyce II
2 — Seth Wilson continues to impress
The St. V freshman guard played another nice game in the win over Ursuline. He scored eight points while grabbing five rebounds and dishing out two assists. On the season against the 6’1” guard is averaging 12.4 points per game to go along with 4.3 rebounds a game.
In the win against Ursuline, he displayed an ability to turn the corner on the dribble and get to the cup. He has extremely long arms and big hands which help him tip loose balls to create turnovers and keep offensive possessions alive. Averaging better than a steal a game and shooting a solid 75 percent from the line.
“He is learning to play with good players,” St. V coach Dru Joyce said of Wilson.
3— Diamond in the rough
Youngstown Ursuline is struggling big time as they fell to 1-10 with the loss. If there is a bright spot it would come in the form of Devan Keevy (2019) a 6’4” lefty who showed flashes of a high-level offensive game in leading his team with 11 points. He can create shot on the perimeter to get off his jump shot, but tends to favor his left and can be shutdown if overplayed.
4— Other impressive Irish performances
Scott Walter (2018), the 5’10” senior point guard scored 11 points and was his usual high energy self. Also impressive for the Irish were J.J. Jones who scored 12 points, including 3 for 3 from 3-point land and Darius Cone (2019), a 6’3” guard who scored six points, grabbed three rebounds and collected three steals in limited minutes.
St. V’s other highly-touted freshman Malaki Branham scored 7 points in 12 minutes in the win over Ursuline. Joyce said the 6’4” freshman is progressing nicely and now just needs to begin finishing stronger inside.
5— Showdown lurks
A nice little showdown of freshman takes place on Jan. 24 when St. V hosts Warrensville. Warrenville has one of the top freshmen in Northeast Ohio in guard Ramelle Arnold (2021) and another top guard in Brandon Rush (2019).
Note: LeBron James attended the game. He arrived late and sat behind the basket closest to the St. V bench. He posed for pictures with fans and friends and seemed very relaxed and chilled out. I spotted him laughing at one point as he talked with former St. V teammate and current St. V AD Willie McGee. Savannah Brinson, Bron’s wife, was also in attendance.
I did shout a question at him, asking him who he thought was better Seth Wilson or Garfield’s sublime frosh guard Meechie Johnson, who earlier this season LBJ shouted out on Twitter after scoring 50 in a game.
He ignored the question as he exited the arena named in his honor.
