Recruiting Report: Derek Krogmann (2019)
Already with one Division I offer to his name, West Delaware’s 6-foot-6 power forward Derek Krogmann could soon be adding plenty more to the list.
North Dakota offered the rangy lefty last year, and he’s since seen his list of suitors swell.
“Outside of North Dakota there’s UNI, Drake, South Dakota, South Dakota State, Dartmouth, Holy Cross (MA) and Wayne State,” said Krogmann.
“I’d say I’ve been in the most contact with UNI and South Dakota, and Holy Cross has been new, but I’ve been getting a lot of mail from them, the Division I in Massachusetts.”
The Dartmouth interest is striking because that’s an Ivy League institution.
“I have a 4.0 and I’m really trying hard to keep that, because I know that will really help to keep my options open. I try just as hard, if not harder academically,” said Krogamnn.
He’s also trying hard to develop his game more out to the perimeter. He knows at 6’6, he’ll be one of the smaller guys in the post at the D1 level, so he’s diversifying his skill-set.
“I’m still working to stretch out my game more and more, and I’m starting to actually play that way in addition to just working on it. I’m starting to handle the ball a little more, score a little better from outside, as well as play inside and rebounding the ball,” said Krogmann.
“The ultimate goal is to be a true three or four, I want to be able to play both of those positions. I want to be able to score it from outside, just as well as I score it from inside. I know at the next level, I’m not tall enough to be a post, and I’ve got to keep working on my game, but that’s the ultimate goal.”
As a junior with the Hawks, Krogmann has been tremendous, going for team-bests 21 points and 12.6 rebounds per game.
“It’s a lot different this year from last year, I have to be one of the leaders this year, and carry a little bit more of the load compared to last year when we had so many key guys,” said Krogmann.
“We’ve had kind of a slow start, but our goal is to be playing our best basketball at the end of the year, and I think that if we keep going in this direction, we’ll be alright by then.”
