Recruiting Report: Kevon Brown (2019)
The McDonogh Eagles kick off their season this evening as they take on St. Paul’s. All of the preseason coverage has been on their star senior guard and Florida commit Noah Locke, but it’s no secret that basketball is a team sport. That’s where guys like Kevon Brown come in.
Brown is a 6’2 athletic guard that offers a very valuable trait to this McDonogh team: an elite defender.
“Last year with me being a sophomore and starting, I knew it was a feeling out process and I had to find my role on the team,” Brown told Prep Hoops. “I had to be that defensive anchor. Noah is a great scorer, so I knew if I did the little things, it would give us a better chance to win. Offensively, I really just tried to be a slasher. I feel as if I can beat my man off the dribble and finish at the cup pretty well.”
Brown averaged eight points, four rebounds and two assists to help the Eagles to a 19-12 overall record in a very tough MIAA A Conference. He knew that once last season ended, there were improvements that had to be made in his game in order to take on a bigger role for his junior season.
Brown used his spring and summer with Team Thrill to tune up his game.
“I played with a lot of great guys like James Bishop (Mt. St. Joseph) and Ace Baldwin (St. Frances),” Brown said. “I wanted to really work on giving myself the identity of being a true point guard. I worked on my jumpshot and improved my overall basketball IQ. I played a lot in pick-and-roll sets to help with certain reads that I couldn’t see last season. I’m a bigger guard, so I can cause match up issues for a lot of teams.”
His junior season will certainly offer a bigger role. Even though Locke will be the centerpiece for this McDonogh team, it’s up in the air as who will be the solidified number two guy. Brown knows being the number two guy doesn’t necessarily mean he needs to light up the scoring column in the box score. As he plans on continuing to improve on his overall point guard skills, his focus now is being a better leader.
“I noticed last year that Damain [Chong-Qui] was extremely vocal,” Brown said. “I know that I’ll continue to grow as a player skill wise, but if I really want to be the impact player, I have to be more vocal and more of a leader on the floor.”
Brown told Prep Hoops that Denver and Howard have expressed interest in him recently. He holds a 3.1 GPA and plans on majoring in Business. Location isn’t an issue for Brown in terms of recruitment, he really just wants to go somewhere that fits his uptempo style of play and also has a strong program for his choice of major.
