Prospect Spotlight: Luke Lundell (2019)
Coming off of a season in which they finished 10-17, the Hibbing Bluejackets are looking to rebound. They lost a number of key contributors from last year’s team, but one key piece is returning.
6’1” junior shooting guard, Luke Lundell, is one of the rising stars in northern Minnesota, and there is one big reason why.
Coach Joel McDonald says Lundell is “without question one of the best shooters this area has seen.” A comment like that carries a lot of weight coming from one of the most prolific scorers in Minnesota prep history.
A season ago, Lundell averaged 13.2 points, 3.9 rebounds, 2 assists, and 1 steal per game, all while shooting 41.3% from beyond the arc. Lundell says “I believe my strengths as a player are my ability to shoot the basketball and provide spacing on the offensive end.”
He did not play any AAU hoops over the summer, but he was tirelessly working on his game in anticipation of the coming season.
Asked about his expectations for this season, Luke says “I see myself playing a leading part on this team on and off the court.” He added “I see this team trying to rebuild this season after losing a lot of key players from last year, but I think we can pull together and win some games.”
Coach McDonald agrees, saying that Lundell “still needs to continue to add things to his attack the rim game” but that “Luke will have to be a leader for us in all phases of the game.”
The Bluejackets also will return Will Durie (7.5 points, 3.5 rebounds) and Phil Rebrovich (3.3 points, 3 rebounds), and according to McDonald “we hope to compete with the top teams of the Iron Range Conference and Section 7AAA.”
While Lundell has not been in contact with many college coaches at this point, his scoring acumen and shooting ability should most definitely open some eyes in the coming months. Lundell will be one of the most efficient and pure scorers in northern Minnesota this winter.
