Cox Mill takes Battle of the Chargers
The “Battle of the Chargers“, was what the highly anticipated match-up between North Carolina’s top public school and North Carolina’s arguably best private school was being touted. Cox Mill High School took on Providence Day School in the Charlotte Hoops Challenge on Saturday night at Butler High School.
Providence Day came out and tried to slow the Cox Mill offense that is set around getting up and down the floor and scoring at a fast pace. Cox Mill junior Wendell Moore scored 27 points and grabbing 16 rebounds on the night, the 6-foot-6 wing led all scorers. UNC signee Rechon Black scored 9 points for the victorious Chargers. Khalid Davis scored 13 points for Cox Mill on the night. The momentum changer came in the third quarter as Cox Mill, outscored Providence Day 20-12. That was a big difference maker leading into the fourth quarter.
Moore was given the task of trying to contain Kansas signee Devon Dotson in the 4th quarter and the Team Charlotte product was held to 13 points on the night, however he did make room for 7 assists.
Providence Day was led by 6-foot-3 guard Isaac Suffren who finished with a team-high 17 points to go with four rebounds and four assists. Santa Clara signee Trey Wertz scored 16 points in the loss to drop Providence Day to 5-1 overall. Providence Day shot 52.4% from the field in the first half, compared to 36% in the second half.
Greensboro Day (ranked #1 in PrepHoopsNC private school poll) travels to Providence Day for a match-up on Tuesday. Providence Day will then head off to China for a week long tournament. Cox Mill High School, with the win improves to 2-0 and take the show on the road for a trip down interstate 4-85 to battle with Rocky River High School and top 2020 guard Jaden Springer & 2020 guard Darlinstone Dubar.
