Wertz and Heath Off the Board
One of the top shooting guards in North Carolina is headed to California for his college career. Trey Wertz of Providence Day School chose Santa Clara over a host of other schools on Sunday morning. PrepHoopNC’s Justin Byerly caught up with Wertz yesterday.
What was it about Santa Clara?
The mix of academics and athletics was a big part of it. Academically, they have a really good business school which is probably where I’ll end up. Athletically, Coach Sendek has a proven track record with big guards and he’s also won wherever he’s been.
Who was your main recruiter and what made the difference with Santa Clara?
Coach Gainey was my main recruiter and the biggest thing was I was a priority from Day 1. I was there guy and they made it really clear they think I will thrive in their system.
What is their plan for you?
Their plan is to use me similar to how they used James Harden at Arizona State as well as how D’Antoni uses him right now and just to help me develop to try to reach my dream.
What are your goals for your senior season?
My goals for senior year is to win a state championship. Also make All-Conference and All-State.
Avery County High School senior guard Deacon Heath made a commitment to UNC-Asheville on Saturday night. He is taking a Preferred walk-on spot for the Bulldogs with a chance to earn a scholarship.
Heath had a great summer and fall at evaluation clinics around the southeast. He was the top player at the PrepHoopsNC Top 250 in Charlotte. Scores from all over the floor. Has a high basketball IQ and has that “dog” in him. One of the most mentally prepared players that I have been around.
Heath had an offer from Lees-McRae College but chose the Bulldogs and Head Coach Nick McDevitt because of his desire and will to play Division One basketball.
