Recruiting Report: Noah Schlader (2018)
Charles City has a legitimate shot to make it back to the state tournament for the first time since 1956, and Noah Schlader could help guide them there.
The 6-foot sniper is returning for his senior season with the Comets after averaging 9.1 points and connecting on 41 percent of his 3s last season.
It’s that sharpshooting ability, and a desire to excel on both ends of the floor, that have some local small schools shopping interest.
“I’ve been in contact with Coe and Iowa Wesleyan. The Iowa Wesleyan coach is a (Iowa) Mavs coach, so he has my information and we’ve been talking over the phone, and I’ve gone a visit there and it’s really nice,” said Schlader.
“I’ve also gone on a visit to Coe, and their assistant coach has been texting me. So those are the two schools I’ve visited, but I want to visit more and see what’s out there.”
Schlader recently wrapped up a successful offseason with Iowa Mavs 17U Purple, and his coach Miguel Villagrana had some nice things to say about him.
“He’s a good shooter, and a better than average defender. A lot of guys would say he’s only a shooter and then he’d come away with three of four steals in a game,” said Villagrana. “There were at least three or four games where he made critical steals for us and went down to get a lay-up when we needed a big bucket.”
We had Schlader break down his playing style in his own words. He emphasized the hustle factor.
“I’m a pretty good shooter from deep, and when I’m dribbling , I can find the open guy. My team can rely on me to work hard at all times, whether it’s defense or offense and to get to loose balls, and hustle back on defense,” he said.
“I get multiple steals while hustling back, because people thought they had easy baskets, and I’d hustle back and stop them.”
Now, as he heads into his senior season with the Comets — a squad that returns its five leading scorers from a 15-win team — Schlader says his role will be to simply help the team get Ws.
“We didn’t lose much, and I have a lot of faith in my teammates,” he said. “Really, my only goal is to do what it takes to get our team to the state tournament, and have a successful season for the Comets.”
As for his recruitment, Schlader is hoping to play well this season, and have an opportunity to generate some more attention.
“I’m just hoping, if I end up wanting to pay in college, that I can find the right fit,” he said. “And I just want to perform the best I can, so that I can find that right fit.”
