Recruiting Report: Boston Grimes (2018)
Sometimes, guys have to wait their turn to showcase their talents, and Johnston 6-foot point guard Boston Grimes has done just that.
He played sparingly last season on a senior-laden Dragons squad, but now, a senior himself, Grimes will have the opportunity to take the reins as a starting guard.
With his uptick in playing time and exposure, area college programs, which are already interested in him, will get a good look at the potential prospect.
“I’ve got Simpson, Central, Iowa Central, schools like that. I don’t have a ton (of recruitment), just because I didn’t really play a lot last year, so most of the colleges want to see me play this season, just to see what I can do,” said Grimes, who elaborated on his recruitment goals.
“JuCo is my main interest, that’s where I’d really like to go. I don’t know exactly what I want to major in yet, and I feel like that two years would help me succeed more if I go to a bigger college after that. So, I feel like those two years would really benefit me.”
A skilled lead guard, with the potential to post some nice numbers this winter, Grimes talked summer improvement, and what his specific skill-set consists of.
“I feel like I bring a lot of energy on the offensive and defensive end, and just distribute the ball really well. And I can knock down open shots and do a pretty good job at getting to the hoop,” said Grimes.
“I need to work on being more consistent with my shooting ability, and as the point guard I need to make sure I keep the ball in my hands and don’t turn it over, and I need to keep the team composed and things like that.”
After appearing in nine games and averaging 0.7 points per game last season, Grimes is projecting to be the starting point guard this season.
He says the Dragons, with their lethal duo of sharpshooters, and a bouncy big-man, could be one of the more underrated teams in the state.
“My role will be to control the tempo and push the ball, and get the ball to the best shooters in the state next to me, Camden (Vander Zwaag) and Bowen (Sandquist). And I got Peyton Williams, who is really underrated,” said Grimes.
“We’ll be good, not a lot of people know about us. It will be exciting.”
