Prospect Spotlight: 2019 Tory Cargo (Video)
Tory Cargo is a relatively unknown prospect but he’s primed for a breakout season with Landry-Walker. At 6-foot-5, 160 pounds, Cargo is a long, lanky guard who’s capable of playing the point or off the ball.
Last season with the Charging Bucs, Cargo was a sophomore scrapping to carve out playing time on a stacked squad that won the Class 5A title as a 22 seed. Cargo would see spot duty here and there but he’ll have a much bigger role in 2017-18.
Landry-Walker is under new direction with coach Byrd Antoine, better known as coach Byrd, taking the reins from legendary coach Brian Gibson, who’s now at his alma mater, SUNO.
Heading into this past summer, Cargo played primarily off the ball where he could use his sharpshooting talents to stretch the defense. During the month of June, however, Byrd made a concerted effort to play Cargo more at the point during summer league action.
Cargo responded beautifully tightening up his handle and getting a better feel for the game and continued to knock down shots at a high rate.
His shooting is unquestionably his most deadly weapon and Cargo is comfortable taking and making big shots from well beyond the 3-point line. His consistency and confidence are matched by few and Cargo is the best shooter in the city for my money.
He’s also becoming more comfortable getting to the rim off the dribble and he’s long and athletic enough to finish above the rim. This is the area Cargo needs to sharpen his skills the most, and being a more consistent finisher can take his game to new heights.
On the other end of the floor, Cargo is an engaged defender that will get down in a stance and defend, but like most young players, he has lapses at times.
Cargo is also a two-sport athlete who’s currently suiting up for the Landry-Walker football team as a backup quarterback who does see the field on occasion.
Cargo has the potential to be a Division I player and coaches would be wise to monitor his progress over the next two seasons.
Here’s a quick look at his summer below and there’s much more where this came from. Cargo easily has more than 10 minutes worth of film.
