Prospect Spotlight: Romanique Hellems (2020)
Des Moines Roosevelt has an intriguing young wing coming through their system with rangy 6-foot-2 wing Romanique Hellems.
We first saw him during the spring when he was playing with Kingdom Hoops Elite 15U, and again last month when he was slicing and dicing at our Top 250 Expo.
We got Hellems on the phone recently, and he discussed his game in detail.
“I see myself as a playmaking scorer, because I’m able to shoot, pass and score the ball inside without getting locked up. So I feel like I can score whenever I want to,” he said.
“And I like to play defense, and guard people full-court and all that. So, basically I do everything.”
During his 15U season, Hellems was showcasing his versatility from start to finish. Proving that because he’s so versatile, he’ll always will find a way to make an impact on the game.
“I think I played good the first two tournaments, my shot was falling for me. And towards the end of the season, my shot wasn’t falling , so I had to attack the basket and things like that,” he said. “I think I played pretty well this season.”
With his sophomore season at Roosevelt just two months away, Hellems discussed with us what his role will be this winter.
“I might play sophomore, because they’ll need me down there. I might play some varsity too, but mostly sophomore,” said Hellems.
“I just want to perfect everything that I’m good at, and getting better at things I’m bad at. This season, there will be no slacking, and I just want to play smart out on the court.”
