Preseason All-Conference: Rolling Valley
Preseason Player of the Year: Joe Weber, Boyer Valley (2018)
One of the state’s best scorers for the past two seasons, Weber despite his small stature, fills it up each night out. Pound-for-pound, he could be the best scorer in Iowa. And after averaging 23.5 points per game last season, it’s not unrealistic to think he’ll be up around 25 per game this season.
First Team
Joe Weber, Boyer Valley (2018) 23.5 PPG, 49 FG%, 37 3FG%, 4.4 APG, 2.4 SPG
At 5-foot-8, Boyer is the most dominant scorer in the conference, that’s saying something. But it’s not just scoring that he brings to the table; he’ll assist in bunches, and get it done defensively, too.
Thomas Hensley, CAM, Anita (2018) 23.0 PPG, 51 FG%, 36 3FG%, 3.9 APG, 4.0 SPG, 5.6 RPG
If Weber is 1A in the Rolling Valley, then Hensley is 1B, and it’s very close between the two. Hensley uses elite speed to dominate on the defensive end — those four steals per game last season are eye-opening. And he could, like Weber, average 25 points per game this winter.
Drew Schurke, Ar-We-Va, Westside (2019) 11.6 PPG, 40 3FG%, 3.5 APG, 2.0 SPG
After graduating four top seniors, Schurke will have a chance to take the reins this season for the always-good Rockets. Look for him to boost his numbers considerably this during his upcoming junior season.
Ben Obert, Coon Rapids-Bayard (2019) 18.6 PPG, 52 FG%, 45 3FG%, 2.8 APG, 1.6 SPG, 4.6 RPG
One of the breakout stars from last season in the conference, Obert is the ultimate threat when it comes to versatility. The 6’3 wing will score at a high clip and do so with great proficiency. His steals, assists and rebounds are a nice bonus.
Jake Berns, Paton-Churdan (2018) 15.6 PPG, 2.2 SPG, 7.0 RPG
This mainstay with the Rockets’ varsity has been posting big numbers for two seasons now, and with the departure of fellow stat-stuffer Joe Tower (Greene County), Berns will have even more a chance to post big-time numbers.
