Preseason All-Conference: MAC
Player of the Year: 2018 Joe Wieskamp, Muscatine
Despite the summer explosion of Bettendorf guard DJ Carton, the Iowa commit is an easy selection for MAC Player of the Year. He led the state in scoring last season, becoming the first 4A player to do so since Marcus Paige, and he posts incredible efficiency numbers. A top-40 player nationally in the 2018 class, we expect nothing but greatness from this uber talented wing from Muscatine.
First Team
2018 Joe Wieskamp, Muscatine (30.4 points, 10.2 rebounds, 2.5 assists, 2.0 blocks, 56.1 FG%, 41.1 3P%)
Barring injury, he’ll become just the second 4A player in history to score over 2,000 career points, and he’ll go down as one of the state’s all-time greatest high school players. A gifted wing scorer who does so with remarkable efficiency, he’s the state’s best player.
2018 Brett Erwin, Davenport West (15.3 points, 9.4 rebounds, 1.9 blocks, 59.3 FG%)
A 6-8 center who has greatly improved throughout his time in high school, this Falcon averaged 15 points, nine rebounds and two blocks last season, and should post similar numbers for a West team that we anticipate being much better than the five-win team from a year ago.
2018 Corvon Seales, North Scott (13.6 points, 4.2 rebounds, 3.2 assists)
A long, athletic wing who gets the job done on both ends of the floor, Seales had one of the most productive summers of anyone in the state, and will carry that momentum into the high school season where he’ll be the main focus following the graduation of Bailey Basala. Capable of scoring at all three levels and locking down the opponent’s best wing scorer, he’s one of the best two-way players in the state.
2019 D.J. Carton, Bettendorf (10.5 points, 4.9 rebounds, 3.2 assists)
There weren’t many players in the country who had a stronger summer than Carton, who picked up offers from the Big Ten, Big 12 and Big East, among some smaller conferences. An explosive left-handed lead guard, he’s going to be asked to score a lot for a Bettendorf team that graduated ten seniors. He’s capable of dominating a game without scoring as well, both with his facilitating and play on the defensive end. Look for some huge stat lines from the impressive junior guard.
2018 Brian Dayman, Pleasant Valley (13.7 points, 8.8 rebounds, 1.8 assists, 53.5 FG%)
A versatile and efficient forward, Dayman led the Spartans in scoring, rebounding and blocks last year, while finishing second in assists. Also a cornerstone of one of the state’s best defensive teams, he’ll pace a Pleasant Valley squad that will be in contention for the league title.
