Mr. Basketball Candidate: Trey Wertz
When a high school prospect scored 25 points for his team to win the NCISAA 3-A state championship, he is a candidate for Mr. Basketball. In 2016, Trey Wertz accomplished that feat in helping Providence Day School to the state title.
Trey WertzCommitted to Herb Sendek and Santa Clara University, Trey has one of the hardest parts of a big-time college prospect behind him for his senior season at Providence Day. Teaming up with Kansa bound point guard Devon Dotson, Wertz and the Chargers are looking at the possibility to reaching the plateau of state champs once again in their senior season.
Wertz is a 6-foot-5 shooting guard that can light it up from the outside and can knock down the mid-range jump-shots. He has the size to shoot and score over smaller guards and can see passes that other players cannot see because of his size. He had a rough start to the summer with Team Loaded NC but got his game going in Las Vegas and really showed that he is one of the premier prospects in the state. With his commitment behind him, look for Wertz to have a great senior season and be in the running for Mr. Basketball when it is all said and done.
Before choosing Santa Clara, Wertz had offers from Boston College, Clemson, Temple, Virginia Tech, and Ivy league schools Yale and Harvard. Former Greensboro Day and Wake Forest standout Justin Gainey was the lead recruiter for Wertz and Santa Clara. Wertz will join 6-foot-3 shooting guard Omar Silverio from St. Raymond’s High School in the Bronx, New York.
