Mr. Basketball Candidate: Nate Hinton
Houston University Head Coach Kelvin Sampson has strong ties to North Carolina. He coached and grew up in the state and came back to scoop up one of North Carolina’s top prospects, Nate Hinton.
Hinton is a 2018 shooting guard at Gaston Day School this season and is a candidate for Mr. Basketball.
Hinton has great size at the guard position being 6-foot-6. He had one of the best summers of anyone in the country on the Adidas circuit playing for Team Loaded NC where he averaged close to 17 points per game. His shot became more consistent over the summer and some high major programs came through and offered Hinton a scholarship. Houston made Hinton a priority from Day One and that was what meant the most to Hinton, picking the Cougars as his college destination.
Hinton is a big guard that can score off the dribble and is able to get rebounds in the paint with his size and athletic ability. As athletic as a player as you will find. He can score in a variety of ways and brings a level of high-energy to the game. He has a great motor that goes and goes. Hinton has done a great job of improving his guard skills, he has always been a gifted scorer and now he has a very good grasp on running a team and defending other top guards. He can play either guard position at the next level and is a super defender. He can get his long arms in passing lanes and get deflections. He usually guards the oppositions best player and can lock them down. He will fit in well with the offense that Houston runs and should thrive early next season.
Hinton is set to lead Gaston Day School this season and has them poised for a run at a NCISAA 2-A state title.
