2020 Guard Class Springer, Cone, Langstaff & Robinson
The 2020 class is stacking up to be a good one in terms of high-level projection and overall talent in the class. There are three guards at the top that really standout to me as being high-level guards in the near future.
Jaden Springer of Rocky River is a top 15 national recruit playing at Rocky River High School outside of Charlotte, North Carolina. Springer has already picked up offer from NC State, Georgia Tech, Wake Forest, Tennessee, UCLA, Virginia Tech and Auburn. He is a skilled guard that beasts his way into the paint and gets easy buckets. At 6-foot-4, Springer is able to see over smaller guards and can get his shot off easily. He has already participated in some Team USA mini-camp exhibitions and is going to be a big-time recruit.
Jalen Cone of Walkertown High School outside of Kernersville, North Carolina is one of the most athletic players at the point guard position that I have seen in a few years. At 5-foot-10, Cone jumps out of the building and hangs in the air on finishes. He can facilitate the fast break, rebound, take over a game at will and has a very high basketball IQ for his age. He can play all three perimeter positions and is a defensive hound that has a great frame that allows him to guard all three positions.
Lee Langstaff is the point guard at Carolina Day School in Asheville, North Carolina. Langstaff is a relative unknown on a national level but I have seen his game enough to project him being in the same talks as the two mentioned above. He has the size, quickness and athletic ability to be a top-level talent in the state. He does a really
good job handling the ball and not making turnovers. He can knock down the set shot or beat you off the dribble and get into the lane or hit the pull-up jumper. He has good court awareness and can find the open man while pushing the ball in transition or off the half-court set. He is a strong defender with long arms that can get into the passing lanes and also keep you from going by him
Kris Robinson of Lincolnton High School will have to take on more of scoring role this season with the departure of Sage Surratt. Robinson has been working on his shot all summer and played really well at The PrepHoops Top 250 in Charlotte. He is a skilled guard with good size that doesn’t make many mistakes. He has really good vision and knows where and where to put the pass.
