Region 2 Preview
Region 2 features a number of top tier shooters. Cyprus might be undersized but they can let it fly with anyone in the state. Further, David Andrew will look to lead Kearns with his hand hot and ability to put it in from anywhere on the floor. Moreover, Bassel Tekarli will look to throw himself into the race of the top shooters in this region. The teams in this region are generally undersized as well. Thus, the measurement for the most successful team will largely be predicated on ones ability to lower the opposing team’s three point shooting percentage.
Region 2: Top 3
1. Hillcrest
Hillcrest got hot in a timely manner last season as it enabled them to make a deep run in the state tournament. Although a number of prospects who were crucial to that run are gone, Hillcrest brings back youth who acquired crucial varsity experience last season. They are the favorite at this point for region 2. A couple of the key players to note are Bassel Tekarli,Tyson Flores, and Brox Ashby Brox Ashby 6'0" | PG Hillcrerst | 2020 State UT . Ashby earned significant playing time last year despite only being a freshman. He should be prepared to take on a bigger role. Further, Tekarli was one of the top shooters on the team last season and will most likely take on more of a true scoring role this season.
2. Kearns
Kearns will have one of the more versatile prospects in the state returning in Majok Kuath. Kuath nearly averaged a double-double last year despite only being a sophomore. With improved length, athleticism, and skill set; it is safe to say that Kuath will be able to do that and more this season. In addition to Kuath, Kearns returns one of the best shooters in the region in David Andrew. The 6’5 PG/SG can shoot it as well as anyone and provides good length at the position. Between Andrew and Kuath, this team should be formidable in this region. Kearns will be a definite contender for region 2.
3. Granger
Granger did not have a stellar record last year. However, they followed the youth movement, largely, and will bring back an improved team who has valuable varsity experience. Roulervee Vann does a great job of putting his teammates in positions to be successful and dictating the tempo of the game. One of the biggest beneficiaries of Vann’s strong passing abilities is SG Anel Alagic. Alagic is a solid scorer who has a nice touch and shoots it well in catch and shoot situations. Lastly, despite being undersized, Jason Murillo brings a workhorse mentality to this team. His toughness is contagious and it would not be surprising to see him improve his 8 and 7 points and rebounds stat line from last year.
