Recruiting Report: Hunter Schneider (2018)
One of the state’s most underrated big men, Shawnee Mission South 2018 Hunter Schneider is starting to draw interest from several colleges after a strong summer.
At 6’7, Schneider is a strong, physical player with a good back-to-the-basket post game, as well as the ability to stretch the floor with his shooting and passing. He is a fundamentally sound player who is a strong rebounder and moves well without the ball.
This past summer he competed for MoKan 17U Select alongside several talented players. He says the experience helped his game grow.
“I really grew on the mental side of the game,” Schneider said. “Learning to focus on the game and getting my mindset right before games and keep that mindset throughout the whole day.”
After going .500 a year ago, Shawnee Mission South returns several talented players, including 2019 wing Jake Pothoff among others.
“I think we have the core group to win games and make a run into the state tournament,” Schneider said. “If we play the right way and share the ball like we can, we can be a great team.”
Schneider says he is looking forward to playing a key game against Olathe Northwest and 2018 forward Luke Waters.
“I want to prove myself against another good post player,” Schneider said. “His game is really versatile and I think that would be great for me as a player to play someone with that all around game.
Schneider says Shawnee Mission South assistant coach Zach Riggins has been the biggest influence on his basketball career to date.
“Since I was a sophomore has told me my capabilities and worked with me to be the player I am today,” Schneider says.
Schneider says he is drawing interest from several NAIA schools and while he does not hold any official offers, he hopes to change that his senior season. He has visited Benedictine College, and plans to visit Buena Vista University and Ottawa University.
“This senior season I really want to show everyone that I can play at a high level in college,” he says.
