Recruiting Report: Byron Joshua (2020)
There is a really good chance that the 2020 class in Louisiana will wind up being really special. There is a possibility that 5-6 players wind up mid-high major, and Byron Joshua is right in the mix. The 5’10 PG of Crescent City Christian already has one state championship under his belt, and looks to be well on his way to a second championship in two years. “Even though we won the state title last year, I think we have a chance to be even better this year. We’ve worked hard, and continue to improve. We are also going to be much bigger than we were last year. As long as we keep improving the little things, we will be just fine.”
Despite the success that Byron has had so far, he still feels like he has work to do. He is still working as hard as ever, regularly staying to shoot at the gym late into the night. “I’m still working to get my left hand stronger. I’m also working on my shot, especially from mid range. I’m also still working to be a smarter guard, just to always know when to pass and when to shoot.” Byron is a consistent shooter from deep, but has a bit of a hitch in his shot, which slows down his release. If he can keep the same consistency from deep, while also speeding up his release, he has a chance to be an elite shooter.
Joshua has begun to pick up some national attention, after playing very well with Elfrid Payton Elite 15u this summer. He was the x-factor with that team, and really got them going. Byron is a shifty lead guard, who is really good at getting into the paint. He finishes at the rim and through contact at a higher rate than you would expect from someone of his stature. He sees the floor pretty well, and is a willing passer.
Byron has yet to pick up an offer yet, but that hasn’t slowed down schools from across the country from showing interest. According to Coach Shaun Dumas, his high school coach, LSU, Virginia Tech, BYU, and Tulane have all reached out, and have shown interest. When it comes to recruiting, Byron isn’t trying to rush things. “I enjoy it, but I have to stay humble. If I focus on it too much, I’m going to get big headed, so I just focus on getting better every day.” When it comes to college, he is just looking for what is best for him. He would prefer to play immediately, but knows he will have to earn playing time. Joshua lists his dream schools as North Carolina and Ohio State, and neither are that far out of range for him. He also has a 2.5 GPA.
