Prospect Spotlight: Tyson Garff
Recently, we wrote an article about another 2019 Davis High School prospect in Brendon Redford. In addition to Redford, Davis played fellow 2019 prospect Tyson Garff in a number of games as well. Garff demonstrated that he is able to score the basketball at an efficient rate. Especially for being a sophomore at the time. Garff, a 6’6 PG, will look to play an even bigger role this season.
Tyson Garff High School
Although Garff did not play in all of the games last season, he averaged a little over 6 points per game in the games that he did. Even more impressive were his shooting percentages. Typically, younger players come into the varsity game and have a difficult time with the speed. Further, they can have a hard time with the physicality and understanding their role. Garff did not have those issues. He came in off of the bench and offered immediate, consistent, and efficient scoring.
Garff’s role will be drastically different this upcoming season. The 6’6 guard will take on much more of a scoring role. His size and skill set will enable him to have an instant impact immediately. As far as his goals are concerned, he stated that he wants “to be an offensive and defensive leader”. He believes, and has demonstrated, that he is capable of “scoring the ball and creating for people”.
Moreover, Garff mentioned that he wants to be “more vocal” as he needs to be the leader on the floor due to playing the point guard position. At his size and length, he is a match up nightmare for opposing guards. If he is able to add this leadership component, this will be a break out season for Garff.
Garff showed signs of a player who could play at the varsity level and have a lot of success. However, he is not resting on that. He claims that he has worked “super hard at all areas of my game”. He noted that he does certain things every day like “shooting, finishing, ball handling, and speed and agility”. However, his primary focus has been “strength” and his “vertical”.
Tyson Garff College Interest
In regards to colleges, Garff has received interest from “Weber State and Boise State”. In addition, he has received a number of letters inviting him to attend camps. With that said, he does not have any scholarship offers at this point.
It is also worth noting that he has a “3.5” GPA. He is a well balanced person who would like to attend a college that is well rounded. He wants to go to a place that has a “good athletic program” and where he will be “challenged to be better both in athletics and in school”. Lastly, he would like to go to a place that has a “good environment socially”.
As far as majors are concerned, he has not decided on one in particular. However, he would like to do something with sports. He mentioned that he has had thoughts about “athletic training” but has not come to a decision at this point.
Look for increased production from Garff and for Davis to have another solid season.
