Prospect Spotlight: Masen Miller (2020)
One part of a dynamic sophomore duo at Iowa City Regina, 5-foot-11 guard Masen Miller spent his summer improving with the Iowa Barnstormers, and he and Even Brauns are poised to make a big mark this winter with the Regals.
Known as primarily a sharpshooter in the past, Miller is indeed able to get hot and stay hot from deep, but this offseason, his game has become much more diverse.
“Last year, I was more of a shooter and just handled the ball for our team. But this offseason, I’ve worked on being more of a versatile scorer. I’ve worked on moves to get to the basket, and just kind of creating my own shot,” said Miller.
“This year, I think I’ll be more of a key scorer for our team. I’ve just tried to make myself more versatile scoring-wise. Defensively, I just try to be solid, play good help, and stuff like that.”
In addition to balling with one of the nation’s best 15U teams this spring and summer, Miller also played with the Regals’ state baseball qualifier.
As much as he enjoyed baseball, Miller says missing the Barnstormers tourneys stung a bit.
“I missed a few tournaments because we had state baseball. But when I was there (with the ‘Stormers), I thought I played well. We had a pretty good season. My role last summer was to be a shooter, and I was really working on getting to the basket this summer,” said Miller.
“I’m trying to decide if I even want to play baseball next season. I really want to focus basketball and keep working on my game, just spending time in the weight room and also the gym.”
Last season as a frosh with Regina, Miller was good, averaging 8.4 points per game on 43 percent from deep. This season, he’ll take on a much larger role.
“I’m going to be a big scorer for my team, and I’ll have to find ways to get shots, and I also think just getting the whole team involved is going to be a big key,” said Miller. “We have a lot of guys coming back, and I think we’re going to be pretty good.”
As for his recruitment, there’s still plenty of time for it all to come together, but Miller is hoping to see some interest start up this winter.
“Not much yet for recruitment, I’ve been invited to a few camps,” he said. “But I’m optimistic for the upcoming season, just trying to get some looks, and get noticed, and try and pull in some recruitment.”
