Prospect Spotlight: Cody McCullough (2020)
Ankeny Centennial 6-foot-7 forward, Cody McCullough, is one in a slew of talented young guns coming through the Jaguars’ system, and the versatile sophomore could be making an impact as soon as this winter with the varsity.
His skill-set was on full display two weekends ago at the Prep Hoops Top 250 Expo in Des Moines, leaving us impressed.
He explained his style of play in his own words during a recent phone interview.
“I feel like my game is about lock-down defense, and I can shoot and take the ball to the rim on offense when my team needs it,” said McCullough.
“On Centennial, I think I’ll play a little bit of the three and four this year, so I’d consider myself more of a wing.”
This past spring and summer, McCullough was able to hone his skills by playing with one of the state’s best 15U teams, All Iowa Attack.
“I think I played pretty good, especially in July, the month after school ball for summer,” he said. “I think I helped my team a lot, some games when Braxton (Bayless) would have an off game, I’d step up and take that place and help us win the game.”
He’s been playing with the Jaguars’ varsity this offseason, in summer and fall leagues, and that could be an indicator of what his role will be within the program this winter.
“I played in the summer league at Dowling with the varsity, and I think I’ll suit most the games with the varsity. And if I don’t perform like I should, I’ll probably play a little sophomore basketball too,” said McCullough.
“I expect to get better at all the little things this season, like dribbling and going left, and communicating more on defense, that’s it.”
