The Process: Tim Martin
Tim Martin trains some of the most promising high school, college and pro prospects in the game. Based out of the Dallas, Texas area Martin has trained the likes of Jawun Evans, PJ Washington and Marques Bolden. He has trained 6 McDonald’s All Americans in the last 3 years, over 54 NBA players and countless grassroots players.
The Process-Tim MartinMartin brought his “The Process” workout regiment to Easley, South Carolina over the weekend and worked out some of the Team South Carolina/SC Raptors players. The two-day event was full of skill work, 3-3 games, 1-1 games, individual workouts and film breakdown.
The way that Martin explains the game and helps the younger generation understand it is what makes him one of the best in the business. He makes it easier for the kids to understand the game and what to do in situations. He has a great mind for the game and I left learning a few things from my time with him on Sunday at The JB Red Owens Sports Complex in Easley.
Creating space, moving without the ball and getting your feet set are pretty simple keys to the game. We all know this. Martin uses game film, and hands on instruction to get his points across. We watched film on JR Smith. Smith is one of the best in the game at getting his feet set before he shoots and there is no magic about with the way that he shoots. His feet are always set. Whether it is coming off screens, off the dribble or a set shot he is square to the basket with his feet in the right position. The way that Martin explains the game and makes it easier to understand was refreshing and made the game slow down for some of the players.
His teaching on attacking a defensive players hip was eye-opening to me. Creating angles with the space that you are given when attacking and blowing by a defensive player by getting to those angles is something that all of the players in attendance will use this high school season moving forward.
