Mr. Basketball Candidate-Rechon Black
The return home for Rechon Black has shaken up the basketball world in the state of North Carolina. The 6-foot-7 forward opted to attend Montverde Academy in Florida this past season. A year of playing against some of the best players in the country, national schedule, playing against better talent and just getting away from home are key factors in going to Montverde to begin with.
This summer, Black decided to come back home to Concord, North Carolina and finish his senior year. He is a PrepHoopsNC candidate for Mr. Basketball, an award to the best player in the state. ” I love being back home with my family and friends for my last year.” he said.
The North Carolina Tar Heel commit is ranked third in the 2018 PrepHoopsNC rankings and is a national ranked at #59 by PrepHoops for 2018. Black is a long and lanky forward who can score off the dribble and can control the ball if need be. He will be teaming up with 2019 highly recruited wing Wendell Moore at Cox Mill High School under head coach Jody Barbee. He is a superb scorer and defender. He will fit into a defender role at North Carolina well, and will be similar to Theo Pinson or Jackie Manuel from the 2005 championship team. Black when asked about Wendell Moore and talking with him about coming to UNC said, “Wendell is a pro honestly he’s improved his all around game so much it’s scary to just think he’s only going to get better from here. I’ve definitely been in his ear about coming to join the family.”
Cox Mill High School won the NCHSAA 3-A state title last season and will look to repeat this year with the addition of Black and return of Wendell Moore and Caleb Stone-Carrawell. “My goals for the season for the team would be to see if we can take it 1 game at a time and see how far we can go. As for myself I’d probably say to just put on a show. Go out every game like it’s my last bc it really is my last ride playing around here,” Black said.
Black on what Roy Williams has asked for him to work on his senior season or improve on, “He’s been pretty positive about the improvement in my body and all around growth in the game and he just wants me to keep improving in all aspects of the game.”
