Mr. Basketball Candidate: Coby White
Coby White is one of the most prolific scorers in North Carolina high school basketball. He averaged nearly 31 points per game this past season at Greenfield School. He was named the Gatorade NC Player of the Year as well this past season. He is a front-runner at being named PrepHoopNC’s Mr. Basketball for this upcoming season.
FOR HIS DAD
Coby lot his dad last month to cancer and he is dedicating this season and the rest of his career to his father, “Doc”. His dad played at North Carolina Central University in the early 70’s. Coby’s brother Will White is an assistant coach at Mars Hill University in the western part of North Carolina. Basketball is in his blood and his family have made sure it was a part of his life.
White committed to North Carolina and head coach Roy Williams about 5 days after a scholarship was offered to him. He always wanted to go to UNC and as soon as the offer was on the table he took it. He will fit in well at Chapel Hill with his ability to score the ball and run the floor. He will be teaming up with Cox Mill High School senior Rechon Black at North Carolina for next season. They both played for Team CP3 on the Nike EYBL circuit where Coby averaged 21.6 points per game.
CHASING JAMESON
He has scored 2,456 points in his high school career and needs 852 more to break the record held by JameSon Curry of 3,307. It is more than likely going to happen for White as long as he keeps up the same scoring that he did last year. The record has been around for nearly 15 years and was thought to be out of reach until a player like Coby came around. The future is bright for the senior and his dad would be proud.
