The Interview: Greg Gantt
Q: You’ve been through this College Day process a few times with Trinity, how has it been this time compared to the prior times?
Greg: The first time I wasn’t expecting so many coaches to be here so I was playing not to make a mistake but now I’m in more of a leadership role so there is more freedom for me and I’m not really worried about messing up or anything like that. I have more confidence because my first time playing everybody was bigger than me but now I’m bigger than a lot of other guys. When you have confidence in your game then you can do much more.
Q: So you’ve went from being a role player to one of the leaders of the team, how do you approach the game differently than you did before?
Greg: When you’re a role player, you feed off the energy of others, but as a leader you really have to bring it, being one of the leaders of the team, people follow you. So you have to come out every night and do what you have to do so that your team will follow your lead, it’s more of a weight on your shoulders but I feel like the better I get, the easier it is.
Q: Do you feel like the work you have put in with your trainer (Gilbert Abraham) has prepared you to embrace that role better?
Greg: Definitely, everything that Coach Heath tells me I need to work on, he helps me work on it to get better. Whether is athleticism, dribbling or shooting, everything we do it relates to the game and I’m glad to have him.
Q: What schools stopped and talked to you today after the workout?
Greg: UNCW, College Of Charleston, Providence, UCLA, NC State, Michigan and a couple of other schools, it was a lot.
Q: What’s something that you feel like will be a major factor in your college choice?
Greg: They have to be real with me, the older I get, the more I can pick out people who aren’t being real with me or people that are just trying to get me to their school. I’m looking for a place that’s going to be like family, I want to go and get better. If I look at a program and they aren’t getting guys better and getting them to the next level then that’s not something I really want to be a part of.
Q: Goals for this season?
Greg: State Championship! Last year we got all the way there and lost to Burlington which really hurt, I never want to feel that again in my life, so that’s the goal this year, get there and win it.
